Internet Society Foundation Awards $1M in Research Grants Studying the Future of the Internet
From the environment to the economy, the Internet is reshaping and disrupting several sectors of our society. What might future patterns of disruption look like? How will these changes affect all of us, particularly those on the margins of society? What new solutions can we generate today, to address the challenges of tomorrow?
At the Internet Society Foundation, we believe the answers to these questions and many others can be found in research. That’s why in September 2020 we announced $1M in grants to support researchers worldwide studying the future and sustainability of the Internet.
Today we’re thrilled to announce the seven awardees. Their projects explore important questions around the Internet’s relationship to society, such as the economic cost of the digital gender gap, the impact of digital labor platforms on worker’s rights, what climate solutions might help decarbonize the subsea cable network, and more.

The Research programme is open to independent researchers and research institutions worldwide and is currently accepting statements of interest, to be reviewed on a rolling basis. Grants of up to US$200,000 will be awarded for research lasting up to two years.

Internet Society Foundation Awards over $1 Million in Digital Skills Development Grants
The Internet is for everyone – a critical lifeline that can uplift communities. But only if we go beyond Internet access and bridge the knowledge gap that continues to persist: the gap between those who have the knowledge and skills to use the Internet to empower themselves and their communities and those who don’t.
To address this divide, the Internet Society Foundation recently awarded over $1 million in digital skills development grants to eight innovative projects in Bangladesh, Colombia and Senegal. In its pilot year, the Strengthening Communities, Improving Lives and Livelihoods (SCILLS) grant programme aims to expand economic growth, improve health outcomes, and increase educational opportunities by supporting individuals and communities to more knowledgeably and skillfully use the Internet.

The Internet Society Foundation was established in 2019 to support the positive difference the Internet can make to people everywhere. The Foundation awards grants to Internet Society Chapters/Special Interest Groups (SIGs) as well as nonprofit organizations and individuals dedicated to providing meaningful access to an open, globally-connected, secure, and trustworthy Internet for everyone.

What Will the Internet Look Like in 2030? New Grants Program for Researchers Studying the Future of the Internet
From the environment to the economy, the Internet is reshaping and disrupting several sectors of our society. What might future patterns of disruption look like? How will these changes affect all of us, particularly those on the margins of society? What new solutions can we generate today, to address the challenges of tomorrow?
At the Internet Society Foundation, we believe the answers to these questions and many others lies in research. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce a new grants program supporting researchers worldwide who are studying the future and sustainability of the Internet. Grants of up to US$200,000 are available for research lasting up to two years and focused in one of two categories:
- Greening the Internet: How the Internet affects and is affected by the environment
- The Internet Economy: How digital technologies are transforming our economic landscape

Strengthening Communities, Improving Lives and Livelihoods: The Internet Society Foundation Launches SCILLS
When people connect to the Internet, they can change the world for the better. And so many people have done just that, using this transformative technology to make strides in education, economic opportunity, and health outcomes. But Internet access is only part of the equation. There’s now a different kind of divide: the gap between those who have the knowledge and skills to use the Internet to empower themselves and their communities – and those who don’t.
To address this gap, the Internet Society Foundation is launching SCILLS: Strengthening Communities, Improving Lives and Livelihoods. The program aims to expand economic growth, improve health outcomes, and increase educational opportunities – by supporting communities to more knowledgeably and skillfully use the Internet.

In its pilot year, the program is open to eligible organizations in Bangladesh, Colombia, and Senegal, with expansion to additional countries planned in coming years. It provides grants of up to $150,000 USD for projects lasting up to 24 months. Applications are open between 9 June and 3 July, and grantees will be announced in early September.
