IDG Contributor Network: Bandwidth alone won’t solve application performance problems

When applications were exclusively hosted in the corporate data center, remote sites had much lower bandwidth and each required its own WAN optimization device. According to conventional wisdom, if we increase bandwidth, performance will improve. However, without decreasing latency, application performance will continue to suffer—no matter how much bandwidth we throw at the network.Four main things contribute to latency: Propagation delay Serialization delay Queuing delay Processing delay Propagation delayThis is the delay between two endpoints. For example, propagation delay is based on the speed of light measured at 5ms per 1000Km. The one-way propagation delay between a data center in New York and a branch in San Jose would be at least 24ms. This assumes a direct fiber path and no router hops, in which case the propagation delay will be significantly higher. For large carriers, one-way delays average 35-45 msec.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

The company is offering a new service that will cover up to US$1 million in damages for any customers infected by ransomware. SentinelOne is calling it the “Cyber Threat Guarantee” and treating it like an extended warranty that customers can buy starting Tuesday. However, the company is convinced it won’t have to make any pay outs, said Jeremiah Grossman, its chief of security strategy. SentinelOne’s failure rate in stopping ransomware attacks is “way less than 1 percent,” he said in an interview. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Case study: IoT lighting system cuts energy costs, improves productivity

You’d think that with a 3-year-old building, its fixtures and systems would be among the best on the market. Not necessarily so. As Atlas Global Solutions found out after conducting an energy audit of a relatively new manufacturing facility, the light fixtures were costing them more than aging manufacturing equipment—the focus of the energy audit. + Also on Network World: How the IoT keeps Ben & Jerry’s ice cream safe +Atlas, a global protective packaging company based in Sutton, Mass., knew its 200,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing facility was not as energy efficient as it could be, said Frank Tavares, the global process engineer for the company. He never thought the biggest waste would be from the lights in the building, though. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Big data paper shows stock market trades behave like light bulbs

In the stock market, electronic trading (AKA “etrading”) originally started so people could buy and sell stocks and other financial instruments more easily. No more hanging out on the floor of a stock exchange or calling your orders into your broker; you could do it all from your desktop. This was good because it made markets more accessible and reduced costs. Then, in the 1980’s, because the electronic trading platforms had application programming interfaces to allow new client-side interfaces to be developed, the inevitable happened, the next generation of electronic trading appeared. Algorithmic trading (AKA “algo trading” or “black box trading”) removed humans from the equation and exploded as the latest, greatest stock market money-making strategy. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Researchers release free decryption tools for PowerWare and Bart ransomware

Security researchers have released tools this week that could help users recover files encrypted by two relatively new ransomware threats: Bart and PowerWare.PowerWare, also known as PoshCoder, was first spotted in March, when it was used in attacks against healthcare organizations. It stood out because it was implemented in Windows PowerShell, a scripting environment designed for automating system and application administration tasks.Researchers from security firm Palo Alto Networks have recently found a new version of this threat that imitates a sophisticated and widespread ransomware program called Locky. It uses the extension .locky for encrypted files and also displays the same ransom note used by the real Locky ransomware. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Facebook takes a step forward with its Net-connectivity plane

Facebook is one step closer to bringing Internet connectivity to remote, underserved areas of the world. The company’s Connectivity Lab completed the first full test of Aquila, a high-altitude, solar-powered, unmanned aircraft that would beam Internet connectivity down to Earth using laser technology. The aircraft would circle an area up to 60 miles in diameter while flying at 60,000 feet. Flying for as long as three months, the energy-efficient aircraft is built to use only 5,000 watts — the same amount as three hair dryers, or a high-end microwave – when at cruising speed. “We’ve been flying a one-fifth scale version of Aquila for several months, but this was the first time we’ve flown the full-scale aircraft,” wrote Jay Parikh, Global Head of Engineering and Infrastructure at Facebook, in a blog post. “To prove out the full capacity of the design, we will push Aquila to the limits in a lengthy series of tests in the coming months and years.”To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here
