A few weeks ago we announced Docker Enterprise Edition (EE), the trusted, certified and supported container platform. Docker EE enables IT teams to establish a Containers as a Service (CaaS) environment to converge legacy, ISV and microservices apps into a single software supply chain that is flexible, secure and infrastructure independent. With a built in orchestration architecture (swarm mode) Docker EE allows app teams to compose and schedule simple to complex apps to drive their digital transformation initiatives.

Docker is deployed across all major cloud service providers, including AWS. So when we announced Docker Datacenter for AWS (which makes it even easier to deploy DDC on AWS) and showed live demos of the solution at AWS re:Invent 2016 it was no surprise that we received a ton of interest about the solution. Docker Datacenter for AWS, as you can guess from its name, is now the easiest way to install and stand up the Docker Datacenter (DDC) stack on an AWS EC2 cluster. If you are an AWS user and you are looking for an enterprise container management platform, then this blog will help answer questions you have about using DDC on AWS.

Docker at AWS re:Invent 2016

Last week we announced the latest release of Docker Datacenter (DDC) with Engine 1.12 integration, which includes Universal Control Plane (UCP) 2.0 and Docker Trusted Registry (DTR) 2.1. Now, IT operations teams can manage and secure their environment more effectively and developers can self-service select from an even more secure image base. Docker Datacenter with Engine 1.12 boasts improvements in orchestration and operations, end to end security (image signing, policy enforcement, mutual TLS encryption for clusters), enables Docker service deployments and includes an enhanced UI. Customers also have backwards compatibility for Swarm 1.x and Compose.

Simply incredible. We spent last week at VMworld speaking with thousands of enterprise security, infrastructure and virtualization pros. It was humbling to witness all of the curiosity and excitement around Docker at the show, and how Docker clearly made a strong impression on the attendees.
This curiosity around Docker and its use within enterprise environments is the reason why i’m writing this blog. We noticed that there were many of the same questions that arose, and we figured we should share them with you, as you start your journey towards adopting Docker containers and VMs.

Docker’s adoption continues to grow in the enterprise. There have been over 5 billion images pulls, and 60% of users are running Docker in production environments. Today Docker is run everywhere – from development to production; in the cloud, on virtual machines and bare-metal servers. Over the past few months we have attended a string of industry tradeshow events, helping to teach the enterprise world about Docker. We were at HPE Discover, DockerCon, RedHat Summit and Cisco Live all within the past 6weeks! I had the pleasure of helping to represent Docker at each of these awesome events and got to speak with attendees about Docker for the enterprise.
Founded in 1820, Indiana University has over 115,000 undergraduate and graduate students, 20,000 faculty members and eight campuses located throughout the State of Indiana. The University’s vision is to provide their students with the best possible education experience via a world-class IT team.
For almost a decade the university was building custom scripts and deploying their applications onto VMs running on RHEL 6. A process that involved lots of manual work. In addition to this, their environment was optimized for their legacy Java-based applications.
In order to give their students the best experience possible, the University needed to not only modernize their 150 applications that span across both administrative and student lines and include everything from human resources based applications, course selection, finances and other student-facing applications. They also needed the ability to deploy their applications across their multi-host datacenter environment. They required a production-ready solution. A tool that would enable them to build new process around packaging, deployment, management, and scale for both centralized and de-centralized environments at the same time.

At DockerCon 2016, the second day’s general session featured products and stories related to Docker running in the enterprise. From product demonstrations of integrated security features, to deployment templates to a session featuring Keith Fulton, CTO of ADP, speaking about their evolution to a tech company and how Docker Datacenter enables them to ship faster, securely at scale across apps big and small.

This is because enterprises of all sizes are now looking to leverage the power of containerization. But what is containerization and how can you leverage containers while also making use of your investment in virtualization?
Orchestration for dockerized applications in production has been a huge reason for why today’s enterprises have begun to leverage Docker Datacenter.
Universal Control Plane, the management layer of the Docker Container-as-a-Service platform delivers production-level orchestration. The tool enables enterprise IT ops teams to manage, deploy and scale their applications across their multi-node clusters. These clusters can be comprised of nodes that exist both in cloud providers like Azure and AWS as well as in the datacenter. Universal Control Plane comes with Docker Swarm embedded into it, giving it the power to create clusters and scale applications across their environment, regardless of infrastructure type, all with support from the Docker team.
