Crazy iOS security flaw lets attackers crash any iPhone or iPad nearby

At the RSA Conference this week in San Francisco, researchers Yair Amit and Adi Sharabani disclosed a dangerous and scary new iOS hack which can cause targeted iPhones or iPads to enter a perpetual reboot loop, effectively rendering the devices all but useless.Amit and Sharabani, who both work for the mobile security firm Skycure, note that the security flaw exists in iOS 8 and can be triggered via manipulated SSL certificates sent to a device over a Wi-Fi network. What's more, a previous iOS bug disclosed by Skycure, dubbed WiFiGate, enables attackers to create their own Wi-Fi network and "force external devices to automatically connect to it." Taken together, attackers can effectively create what is referred to as a "No iOS Zone."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Ben and Jerry’s spoofs Apple’s ‘1984’ ad in new BRRR-ito commercial

Largely considered one of the best TV commercials to ever hit the air, Apple's award-winning "1984" ad is ripe for parody, even in 2015.Putting that thought into practice, Ben & Jerry's today rolled out a new commercial for its upcoming BRRR-ito product. As the name implies, think ice cream delightfully wrapped up in a waffle cone shell, a'la a standard burrito. To help get the word out, Ben and Jerry's new commercial liberally borrows quite a few directorial cues from Apple's "1984" ad, resulting in an all around great and super creative advert.Check it out below. Apple Watch already sold out of all models

If there was any doubt as to how consumers would take to the Apple Watch, I think we can put them to rest. Just six hours after the Apple Watch opened up for pre-orders, Apple's initial supply was completely sold out. What's more, even folks who were lucky enough to have their orders processed may see shipping times of 4 to 6 weeks. All in all, it's clear that demand for Apple's hotly anticipated wearable is extremely robust. While it remains to be seen just how revolutionary and game-changing a product the Apple Watch will or will not be, things are certainly off to a good start. As for current shipping times, MacRumors recently compiled this list which should provide a ballpark figure for which Apple Watch models might ship sooner than others. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Apple trying to discourage Apple Watch lines at launch

In many ways, new Apple product launches have become ritualistic affairs. The night before a new product goes on sale, enthusiastic consumers line up outside of Apple retail stores in lines that sometimes stretch out for blocks on end. With the Apple Watch slated to launch in a few weeks, that ritual may finally be coming to an end. According to an internal Apple memo obtained by Business Insider, Apple retail head Angela Ahrendts wants to put the days of waiting in line in the past, all in the interest of enhancing the customer shopping experience. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Apple Watch Reviews: Complete Roundup

Like clockwork, the embargo on Apple Watch reviews ended on Wednesday morning, just two days ahead of when pre-orders of the device are scheduled to open up. Per usual, Apple sent review units to a few outlets who have now lifted the veil of secrecy from Apple's highly anticipated wearable. Below are a few of the more notable excerpts from the initial grouping of Apple Watch reviews.Nilay Patel of The Verge: Let’s just get this out of the way: the Apple Watch, as I reviewed it for the past week and a half, is kind of slow. There’s no getting around it, no way to talk about all of its interface ideas and obvious potential and hints of genius without noting that sometimes it stutters loading notifications. Sometimes pulling location information and data from your iPhone over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi takes a long time. Sometimes apps take forever to load, and sometimes third-party apps never really load at all. Sometimes it’s just unresponsive for a few seconds while it thinks and then it comes back.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

With the Apple Launch now just about two weeks away -- and pre-orders slated to begin this Friday at 12:01 AM Pacific Time -- Apple CEO Tim Cook sent out an email thanking Apple employees for the hard work involved in bringing the Apple Watch to market and for the work retail employees will do once the product launches. In addition to the typical boilerplate that sometimes accompanies corporate emails, Cook relayed that Apple employees looking to purchase an Apple Watch will be able to do so at a 50% discount. The discount is applicable to the Sport and Watch models, which is to say that Apple is most definitely not offering any discounts on the Edition Apple Watches. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Apple Watch pre-orders to begin at 12:01 Pacific Time on April 10

Apple on Friday afternoon updated its Apple Watch page with more precise details regarding Apple Watch pre-orders. According to Apple's website, pre-orders for Apple's highly anticipated wearable will begin at 12:01 AM Pacific Time  on Friday, April 10. Of course, this doesn't bode well for prospective buyers on the East Coast who will have to wait up until 3:01 AM in order to get their orders in.The latest reports from the rumor mill suggests that the Apple Watch will not be available to walk-in shoppers. Which is to say, if you want to get your hands (or wrist, as it were) on an Apple Watch, you absolutely must pre-order the device or make a reservation to check one out in-store. Presumably, walk-in sales will eventually be possible once supply is properly calibrated to match demand. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Apple details secret history behind the Apple Watch

The Apple Watch is unquestionably Apple's biggest gamble in years. Not only does the device represent a new product for Apple, it represents an entirely new product category altogether. With the device slated to launch in just about three weeks, all eyes will be watching closely to see if Apple has truly delivered yet another revolutionary product.Ahead of the highly anticipated Apple Watch launch, Wired today posted an exhaustive recap of the Apple Watch development process, which began in earnest shortly after Steve Jobs' passing. Apple decided to make a watch and only then set out to discover what it might be good for (besides, you know, displaying the time). "There was a sense that technology was going to move onto the body," says Alan Dye, who runs Apple's human interface group. "We felt like the natural place, the place that had historical relevance and significance, was the wrist."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Why HBO partnered with Apple for HBO Now

During Apple's most recent special event, the company announced that HBO Now, a new HBO service which doesn't require a cable TV subscription, would premiere on Apple TV.In the days that followed, it was discovered that HBO Now will be an Apple TV exclusive for three months, after which the service will be opened up to other media platforms. Still, with HBO seemingly not needing Apple to get a foothold in the living room, one has to wonder why and how Apple was able to secure a 3 month exclusivity arrangement.Addressing this very topic, HBO CEO Richard Plepler explained as much during a Tuesday interview with CNBC.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Tim Cook takes stand against Indiana’s “religious freedom” law

In a testament to Tim Cook's character, the Apple CEO recently penned an op-ed piece in the Washington Post regarding the recently passed legislation in Indiana which allows business to discriminate against individuals on account of their sexual orientation, all in the name of religious freedom. With the Apple Watch set to launch in under a month, April is arguably the most important month Apple has seen in quite some time. And still, Cook has no qualms about throwing his hat into the ring and getting involved in a debate that might alienate some more closed-minded customers. All of this reflects highly on Tim Cook insofar as he's not afraid to speak out on important issues even in anticipation of one of the company's most important product launches ever.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Tim Cook plans to donate all his money to charity

On the path to becoming a billionaire, like many prominent tech CEOs before him, Apple's Tim Cook isn't the type of guy prone to blowing large sums of cash on lavish expenditures like yachts, mansions, and fast cars.On the contrary, Cook revealed in a recent in-depth interview with Fortune that he plans to quietly give away all of his money to charity, save of course some money set aside for his nephew's college education. He plans to give away all his wealth, after providing for the college education of his 10-year-old nephew. There should be plenty left over to fund philanthropic projects. Cook’s net worth, based on his holdings of Apple stock, is currently about $120 million. He also holds restricted stock worth $665 million if it were to be fully vested. Cook says that he has already begun donating money quietly, but that he plans to take time to develop a systematic approach to philanthropy rather than simply writing checks. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Gold Apple Watch buyers will receive special treatment

When the upcoming Apple Watch goes on sale on April 24, it will be the most complex and downright confusing product Apple has ever released, by far. With an assortment of styles, bands, and materials, there will be a seemingly never-ending selection of options for users to choose from.At the same time, the Apple Watch will be the most expensive product Apple has ever released. While the Sport models will start at just $349 (for the 38mm version), the Edition models will start at $10,000 and range all the way up to $17,000. Naturally, not every Apple Store will carry the expensive gold Edition models. During Apple's most recent Apple Watch event, Tim Cook noted that only select stores will carry the device, and in limited quantities at that. What's more, it's been reported that the Edition Apple Watch models will be safely stowed away in secure safes in-store, much in the same way that boutique watch stores protect their most valued merchandise. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Upcoming Apple TV will feature App Store and Siri

Amid reports that Apple is planning to roll out its own streaming TV service later this fall, we now have word regarding what Apple's fourth-gen Apple TV is going to look like.Reporting for Buzzfeed, John Paczkowski reports, that Apple plans to show off a completely revamped version of its Apple TV at WWDC sometime this June. And though previous Apple TV updates have been somewhat limited to internal upgrades, this one promises to be a doozy.First off, the next iteration of the Apple TV will reportedly include, at long last, an App Store. Just as the App Store significantly increased the value proposition of iOS devices, we can expect to see a similar transformation with respect to the Apple TV. Even more so when one considers the possibilities of using external controllers, or even one's iOS device, as a controller while playing games on a big screen HDTV.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Tim Cook talks Apple Watch, Steve Jobs, and more

With about a month to before the Apple Watch launches, Apple CEO Tim Cook sat down with Fast Company for a wide-ranging interview that touched on a number of pertinent topics. When asked rather directly about the perception among many that the Apple Watch still lacks an overarching use case, Cook articulated that similar pessimism colored previous Apple product launches. With the iPod, the expectations for Apple itself at that time were very low. And then most people panned the iPod's price. Who wants this? Who will buy this? We heard all the usual stuff. On iPhone, we set an expectation. We said we'd like to get 1% of the market, 10 million phones for the first year. We put that flag in the sand, and we wound up exceeding it by a bit.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

USB C – What you need to know about Apple’s newest port

Apple's special media event wasn't all about the upcoming Apple Watch. Per usual, Apple had a few tricks up its sleeve. Specifically, Apple surprised almost everyone when they introduced a new and incredibly thin 12-inch Retina MacBook. What makes Apple's new MacBook so fascinating is that it only comes with one port -- USB C. Just one solitary USB port to rule them all, as many people have jokingly characterized it. In other words, there's no MagSafe, there's no Thunderbolt, and there are no additional USB ports. All of the ports we've come to know and love are nowhere to be found on Apple's new super light and stylish MacBook. But just what is USB C, exactly, and why are so many people exceedingly excited about its inclusion on the soon to be released MacBook? To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here
