THE ENTERPRISE IT CHECKLIST FOR DOCKER OPERATIONS
At Docker, we believe the best insights come from the developers and IT pros using the Docker platform every day. Since the launch of Docker Enterprise Edition, we learned three things from our customers.
- First, a top goal in enterprise IT is to deliver value to customers (internal business units or external clients)…and to do so fast.
- Second, most enterprises believe that Docker is at the center of their IT platform.
- Finally, most enterprises’ biggest challenge is moving their containerized applications to production in time to prove value. My DockerCon talk focused on addressing the third item, which seems to be a critical one for many of our customers.
In our recent customer engagements, we’ve seen a pattern of common challenges when designing and deploying Docker in an enterprise environment. Particularly, customers are struggling to find best practices to speed up their move to production. To address some of these common challenges, we put together a production readiness checklist (https://github.com/nicolaka/checklist) for Docker Enterprise Edition. Modernizing Java Apps with Docker
Modernizing Traditional Applications or MTA was one of the themes at DockerCon EU 2017. Traditional applications are typically built a number of years ago but are critical to business operations. The developer and operational skill set to maintain the application may be hard to find. The code base can be difficult to maintain, if it is available at all. The team that wrote the original app may not even be around. The applications go into maintenance mode, which may mean they are patched regularly for vulnerabilities. Any revisions to the code can take significant number of hours to test and deploy, so updates are infrequent. It can also hold back infrastructure improvements as dependency management becomes a huge pain point.
Any modern application needs a faster delivery time that can adapt to change in the market conditions. The pipeline from pushing the code to a source code repository to the application delivery should be efficient, automated, secure and fast. The application should be able to scale to demand, typically done by horizontal scaling across multiple instances. Intesa Sanpaolo Builds a Resilient Foundation for Banking With Docker Enterprise Edition
Intesa Sanpaolo is the largest bank in Italy and maintains a network of over 5,000 banking branches across Europe and North Africa. With nearly 19 million customers and €739 billion in assets, Intesa Sanpaolo is an integral part of the financial fabric and as such, Italian regulations require that they keep their business and applications online to serve their customers.
As a bank that can trace its roots back to the early 1800s, the majority of Intesa’s edge applications are still monolithic and hard to move between data centers, never mind migrate to the cloud. Diego Braga, Intesa IT Infrastructure Architect, looked to Docker Enterprise Edition (EE) at the recommendation of his Kiratech business partner Lorenzo Fontana to improve their application availability, portability and add cloud friendly application delivery. With Docker EE, Intesa was able to consolidate infrastructure by nearly 60%, thus saving significant money over their previous design, while also enabling higher application availability across regional data centers and preparing themselves for the cloud.
Prior to the Docker EE implementation, not only were the applications monoliths, but Intesa maintained two separate data centers as mirrors of each other to achieve high availability. This design required excess, cold standby hardware capacity in Continue reading
Tips and Tricks of the Docker Captains
My talk at DockerCon EU was designed to provide the audience with a bunch of tips for making the most of Docker. The tips were inspired by suggestions, blogs and presentations by other Docker Captains as well members of the larger Docker community.
The motivation for the talk was to enable users to quickly gain a higher level of proficiency and understanding in Docker. The metaphor I use is with traditional carpentry tools; whilst a novice can pick up a saw and cut a piece of wood, an expert will be able to do the same job more quickly, more accurately, and with less frustration. The reason why is partly experience, but also because the expert has a more thorough understanding-of and affinity-with her tools. The tips in my talk are designed both to reduce frustration and increase efficiency when working with Docker.
To give an example, one of the tips I present is on configuring the `docker ps` output format. By default `docker ps` prints out a really long line that looks messy except on the widest of terminals. Modernizing Applications from PoC to Production with Docker Enterprise Edition
Containerizing a single legacy application with Docker Enterprise Edition (EE) can be quite simple and immediately makes the application more portable, scalable, and easier to manage and update. Taking this application to production requires additional planning and collaboration with security teams, performance testing and likely requires detailed operations and disaster recovery plans. This part of the process often has little to do with the technology but with the changes to the organization and governance model.

GlaxoSmithKline is a global pharmaceutical company headquartered in the United Kingdom. Their company mission is “to help people do more, feel better, and live longer”. One way they are doing that is by using data science to find new drug formulations that can improve lives. At DockerCon Europe, Ranjith Raghunath, the director of Big Data Solutions and Lindsay Edwards, the head of Respiratory Data Sciences at GlaxoSmithKline presented how Docker Enterprise Edition (Docker EE) is helping them accelerate drug discovery through a project called Edge Node On Demand.

The biggest challenge in pharmaceutical research is that hundreds of drugs formulations need to be created to take one successfully to market only 3% of formulated molecules actually become medicine. MetLife Uses Docker Enterprise Edition to Self Fund Containerization
MetLife is a 150 year old company in the business of securing promises and the information management of over 100M customers and their insurance policies. As a global company, MetLife delivers promises into every corner of the world – some of them built to last a lifetime. With this rich legacy comes a diverse portfolio of IT infrastructure to maintain those promises.
In April, Aaron Aedes from MetLife spoke about their first foray into Docker containerization with a new application, GSSP, delivered through Azure. Six months later, MetLife returns to the DockerCon stage to share their journey since this initial deployment motivated them to find other ways to leverage Docker Enterprise Edition [EE] within MetLife.
Jeff Murr, Director of Engineering for Containers and Open Source at MetLife spoke in the Day 1 DockerCon keynote session about how they are looking to scale containerization with Docker as they scale . He states that new technology typically adds more cost and overhead to an already taxed IT budget. But the Docker Modernize Traditional Apps [MTA] Program presented an opportunity to reduce the costs of their existing applications.

Finnish Railways and Accenture Partner to Modernize Key Transportation Apps
VR Group is the state-owned company that runs Finnish Railways, and provides 82 million passenger train rides and transports 36 million tons of goods per year. The 150+ year old transportation business is broken into separate divisions, each with their own technology departments. Finnish Railways does not have an in-house development team, so each division leverages external vendors and partners for their application development needs.
On Day 2 of DockerCon Europe, Markus Niskanen, Integration Manager at VR Group, and Oscar Renalias, Solutions Architect at Accenture presented their story on how they worked together to modernize critical business applications for Finnish Railways, including the reservation and commuter applications.
Partnership Drives Faster Results
Finnish Railways began working with Accenture, a long-time partner, to design a new common application platform based on Docker Enterprise Edition (EE). Leveraging Accenture’s Container Migration Factory, Finnish Railways had access to hundreds of Docker-trained Accenture architects which meant that this project could be delivered more efficiently. For example, Accenture has customized Terraform scripts that set up a Docker EE environment in AWS in about 25 minutes.

What is Notary and why is it important to CNCF?
As you may have heard, the Notary project has been invited to join the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Much like its real world namesake, Notary is a platform for establishing trust over pieces of content.
In life, certain important events such as buying a house are facilitated by a trusted third party called a “notary.” When buying a house, this person is typically employed by the lender to verify your identity and serve as a witness to your signatures on the mortgage agreement. The notary carries a special stamp and will also sign the documents as an affirmation that a notary was present and verified all the required information relating to the borrowers.
In a similar manner, the Notary project, initially sponsored by Docker, is designed to provide high levels of trust over digital content using strong cryptographic signatures. In addition to ensuring the provenance of the software, it also provides guarantees that the content is not modified without approval of the author anywhere in the supply chain. This then allows higher level systems like Docker Enterprise Edition (EE) with Docker Content Trust (which uses Notary) to establish clear policy on the usage of content. Docker Platform and Moby Project add Kubernetes
Today we’re announcing that the Docker platform is integrating support for Kubernetes so that Docker customers and developers have the option to use both Kubernetes and Swarm to orchestrate container workloads. Docker is a platform that sits between apps and infrastructure. By building apps on Docker, developers and IT operations get freedom and flexibility. That’s because Docker runs everywhere that enterprises deploy apps: on-prem (including on IBM mainframes, enterprise Linux and Windows) and in the cloud. Once an application is containerized, it’s easy to re-build, re-deploy and move around, or even run in hybrid setups that straddle on-prem and cloud infrastructure.
The Docker platform is composed of many components, assembled in four layers:
- The containerd industry-standard container runtime implementing the OCI standards
- Swarm orchestration that transforms a group of nodes into a distributed system
- Docker Community Edition providing developers a simple workflow to build and ship container applications, with features like application composition, image build and management

Extending Docker Enterprise Edition to Support Kubernetes
At DockerCon Europe, we announced that Docker will be delivering seamless integration of Kubernetes into the Docker platform. Bringing Kubernetes to Docker Enterprise Edition (EE) will simplify and advance the management of Kubernetes for enterprise IT and deliver the advanced capabilities of Docker EE to a broader set of applications.
Swarm and Kubernetes Side-by-Side
Docker EE is an enterprise-grade container platform that includes a private image registry, advanced security features and centralized management for the entire container lifecycle. By including Kubernetes for container orchestration, customers will have the ability to run both Swarm and Kubernetes in the same Docker EE cluster while still leveraging the same secure software supply chain for building and deploying applications.

This is possible because Docker EE has a modular architecture that is designed to support multiple orchestrators. The Linux nodes are both Swarm and Kubernetes-ready and application teams can decide which orchestrator to use at app deployment time.
When creating a new Stack in Docker EE, you are given the choice of deploying it as Swarm Services or as Kubernetes Workloads:

Beta Docker for Mac and Windows with Kubernetes
Today, as part of our effort to bring Kubernetes support to the Docker platform, we’re excited to announce that we will also add optional Kubernetes to Docker Community Edition for Mac and Windows. We’re demoing previews at DockerCon (stop by the Docker booth!) and will have a beta program ready at the end of 2017. Sign up to be notified when the beta is ready.
With Kubernetes support in Docker CE for Mac and Windows, Docker Inc. can provide customers an end-to-end suite of container-management software and services that span from developer workstations, through test and CI/CD through to production on-prem or in the cloud.

Videos series: Modernizing Java Apps for IT Pros
Today we start releasing a new video series in Docker’s Modernize Traditional Apps (MTA) program, aimed at IT Pros who manage, maintain and deploy Java apps. The video series shows you how to move a Java EE 7 application written to run on Wildfly 3, move it to a Windows Docker container and deploy it to a scalable, highly-available environment in the cloud – without any changes to the app.
These are the first 4 of a 5 part video series in Docker’s Modernize Traditional Apps (MTA) program, aimed at Java IT Pros. The video series shows you how to move a Java EE app on JBoss Wildfly to a Docker container and deploy it to a scalable, highly-available environment in the cloud – without any changes to the app.
Part 1 introduces the series, explaining what is meant by “traditional” apps and the problems they present. Least Privilege Container Orchestration
The Docker platform and the container has become the standard for packaging, deploying, and managing applications. In order to coordinate running containers across multiple nodes in a cluster, a key capability is required: a container orchestrator.
Orchestrators are responsible for critical clustering and scheduling tasks, such as:
- Managing container scheduling and resource allocation.
- Support service discovery and hitless application deploys.
- Distribute the necessary resources that applications need to run.
Unfortunately, the distributed nature of orchestrators and the ephemeral nature of resources in this environment makes securing orchestrators a challenging task. In this post, we will describe in detail the less-considered—yet vital—aspect of the security model of container orchestrators, and how Docker Enterprise Edition with its built-in orchestration capability, Swarm mode, overcomes these difficulties.

One of the primary objectives of Docker EE with swarm mode is to provide an orchestrator with security built-in. To achieve this goal, we developed the first container orchestrator designed with the principle of least privilege in mind.
