iPhone 7 Rumor Rollup: 1 Billion reasons to care; Sept. 16 looms large

Rumors about Apple’s anticipated iPhone 7 and 7 Plus smartphones are getting awfully specific these days, as we reportedly get within 5 or so weeks of the formal announcement.Venture Beat reporter Evan Blass tweeted this week that he had confirmation Apple’s new iPhone pre-orders would begin on September 9th. He suggested followers “extrapolate the launch date from there,” and indeed, the masses have determined that Apple will likely announce its new products on Sept. 6 at a post-Labor Day event, and then make its new devices available come Sept. 16. And in fact, the reliable Blass had tweeted the previous week that Sept. 16 would be the date of Apple’s retail release. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Telco central offices could be in for open source makeover

A first-of-its-kind gathering dedicated to re-inventing telco central offices as open source-infused data centers will take place on Friday at Google's Sunnyvale Tech Campus. CORD The CORD Summit, hosted by the Open Networking Lab (On.Lab) and The Linux Foundation, promotes the use of technologies such as Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), software-defined networking (SDN) and the cloud "to bring datacenter economics and cloud agility to service providers' Central Office." CORD is kind of an acronym for Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter, and is designed to benefit enterprise, residential and wireless networks. A mini version of this event was held in March as part of the broader Open Networking Summit. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Developers’ conscientiousness key to limiting software bugs, researchers say

University researchers have found that organizations looking to clean up their IT systems need to pay more attention to the moods and personalities of those people working on them."Organizations focus too much on the technical and mechanical aspects of IT errors, rather than the human and environmental aspects of the errors," said Sumantra Sarkar, assistant professor of information systems at Binghamton University’s School of Management, in a statement. "Our study suggests the mood and personality traits of the software development team affect how they report on self-committed errors in IT projects. A minor glitch in design or programming can have devastating consequences."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

My big intro to BI & analytics vendor MicroStrategy

MicroStrategy, a veteran of the business intelligence and analytics market that is currently littered with so many startups, has plenty to boast about and isn’t shy about doing it.Its revenue comes in at more than half a billion dollars, the company is profitable, and it serves giant customers like eBay and the U.S. Postal Service. A competitor of vendors such as SAP and Tableau, MicroStrategy gushes over how Gartner analysts rate it. And according to globetrotting CEO and Co-Founder Michael Saylor, Version 10 of MicroStrategy's flagship product is “the most powerful software ever released” -- so much so that a customer could feel secure including "a nuclear order of battle into an [encrypted and geolocked] application, put it on an iPad and hand it to the President of the United States."To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

When COWs fly: An AT&T drone experiment

You might be familiar with the Cell on Wheels (COW) concept that carriers have deployed to bring temporary wireless service to busy venues or disaster relief areas. Now AT&T is giving the COW acronym a new high-flying meaning: Cell on Wings. The carrier at its Shape Tech Expo at AT&T Park in San Francisco this week provided an update on its drone (unmanned aerial vehicles) efforts, including what it calls flying COWs. John Donovan, chief strategy officer and group president for AT&T Technology and Operations, wrote in a blog post that AT&T this week was starting the trial phase of its national drone program. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Startups boldly challenge Internet, mass transit & password status quo

One startup pledged to “make passwords impossible to steal.” Another promised technology to "absolutely change the face of the Internet itself!” And an asphalt-hating CEO said his outfit’s zippy overhead pods will be a green replacement for gas guzzling vehicles in big cities within a couple of years. The 88th edition of Mass Innovation Nights on Tuesday gave the stage – at host LogMeIn’s airy Boston Seaport digs – to an idealistic handful of startups unfettered so far by venture capital and repetitive marketing lingo (I only heard the dreaded word “journey” once!). The founders eagerly answered questions posed by attendees – including precocious teens on summer break -- and collected certificates earned for winning a popular vote among audience members. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Pokemon Go maker addresses Google account access scare

It looks like it's safe to go back into the Pokemon Gyms and PokeStops, as Pokemon Go maker Niantic has addressed concerns that it has unfettered access to Google accounts of those who signed up for the popular mobile game via their iOS devices.(Those who have signed up for Pokemon Go via the Pokemon Trainer Club weren't threatened with the security/privacy issue, but it has proven difficult for some to get through the crowded Trainer Club servers.)Niantic, looking to assuage fears that it can read/send from your Gmail account and dip into your Google Docs, has issued the following statement: Permissions update We recently discovered that the Pokémon GO account creation process on iOS erroneously requests full access permission for the user’s Google account. However, Pokémon GO only accesses basic Google profile information (specifically, your User ID and email address) and no other Google account information is or has been accessed or collected. Once we became aware of this error, we began working on a client-side fix to request permission for only basic Google profile information, in line with the data that we actually access.  Google has verified that no other information has been received or Continue reading

2016 technology industry graveyard

Pay your respectsTech vendors only have so many resources, and as a result they continually have to make tough choices about which products stay and go. Bugs & Bugs: As in, the software kind — and insects

Network World this past Friday afternoon launched the alpha version of our possibly regular new Facebook Live stream dubbed Bugs & Bugs, as in the software kind and actual insects.I've joined forces with our resident IT security expert, Tim Greene, who handles the software bugs side of things. I, an amateur entomologist, take charge of the insect news.Perhaps surprisingly, there is no shortage of either. Between Tim checking out the new Stuxnet documentary Zero Days and reviewing new research from New York University and others to help reduce software bugs, and me catching up on the Gypsy Moth invasiion and a cyborg locust, we had no shortage of material. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Check this out: Walmart Pay for iOS & Android can now be used in all of retailer’s US stores

The following email subject lines appeared in my inbox on Wednesday just a couple of hours apart:* Walmart Pay Now Available in all Walmart Stores Nationwide (from Walmart PR)* Map of Walmart store closings (from a market research firm making a larger point about rapid changes in retail and consumer packaged goods markets) My first thought, upon noticing the juxtaposition, was well, having 154 fewer stores in the US this year probably made it easier for Walmart to roll out its mobile payment app nationwide.MORE: 7 reasons mobile payments still aren't mainstreamTo read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Tetris comes to Megaprocessor

The game Tetris has gone through many configurations over its 30-plus years in existence (including on an MIT building in in a pumpkin), but perhaps none is more impressive than a Cambridge, England man's version running on a giant homemade computer. The BBC reports on James Newman, who has been building his 33-foot wide, 6-foot high Megaprocessor since 2012, and has shared a series of Youtube videos about the project, including a demo of the behemoth running Tetris. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here
