Cisco takes its first steps toward network-as-a-service

Google and Cisco extend SD-WAN, cloud network-management integration

Google and Cisco have extended their technology development relationship to make it easier to marry cloud-based resources with SD-WAN command and control.The expanded technology agreement is centered around a cloud-based network-management system Google rolled out this week that promises to let customers configure and manage multiple on-prem- and public-cloud networks. The new service, called Network Connectivity Center, offers a central console for connecting and watching over multiple networking aspects, including traffic flows, performance metrics, and VPN connectivity.To read this article in full, please click here

VMware bolsters cloud app security with Mesh7 buy

With a goal of making distributed applications more secure, VMware has announced plans to buy security vendor Mesh7 for an undisclosed amount.Combining the acquisition with its other security wares, VMware aims to address modern applications that require reliable connectivity, dynamic service discovery, and the ability to automate changes quickly without disruption as they extend across multi-cloud environments, said Tom Gillis, senior vice president and general manger with VMware's networking and security business unit, in a blog about the Mesh7 acquisition.To read this article in full, please click here

Microsoft, VMware marry Azure Virtual WAN Hub with VMware SD-WAN

Microsoft and VMware have taken their well-established relationship up a notch by tying together application and network technologies to help customers support secure WAN access to critical enterprise applications.Specifically, the companies have combined Azure Virtual WAN Hub with VMware's SD-WAN technology so that VMware's SD-WAN customers can link resources using the networking, security, and routing services in Azure WAN Hub. Cisco closes $4.5B deal on optical powerhouse Acacia

After some legal wrangling earlier this year, Cisco has closed the $4.5 billion deal for optical maker Acacia Communications, Inc. Cisco coveted Acacia for its high-speed, optical interconnect technologies that let data center operators, webscale companies and service providers offer ever-faster service access to widely distributed resources. It also reinforces Cisco’s commitment to optics as a critical building block for networks of the future. “Acacia offers a complete portfolio of long-distance data-transmission solutions that address the full range of applications in the data-center-interconnect and wide-area network segments for metro, regional, long haul, and subsea links,” wrote Bill Gartner, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco's Optical Systems and Optics Group in a blog about the acquisition.To read this article in full, please click here

Cisco issues 3 critical warnings around ACI, NS-OX security holes

Cisco has issued three security advisories rated “critical” for some of its high-end software systems—two aimed at its Application Services Engine (ASE) implementation and one at the NX-OS operating system.The most concerning warning came for Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) Multi-Site Orchestrator (MSO) installed with the ASE which was rated a worse-case scenario, 10 out of a possible 10 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS).  The ACI Multi-Site Orchestrator lets customers control application-access policies across Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller-based fabrics.To read this article in full, please click here
