IBM strengthens mainframe cloud services with CA’s help

Cisco taps AMD to power a hyper-dense server for data centers, edge computing
Cisco this week broadened its server family with a high-density box aimed at handling compute intensive data center workloads and distributed edge computing environments.The Cisco C-Series C4200 multinode rack server is a 2RU box comprised of the C4200 chassis and C125 server nodes which Cisco says brings up to 128% higher processor core density and 33% more memory compared to its existing two-socket UCS M5 rack servers. The C4200 chassis can house up to four server nodes.[ Now see who's developing quantum computers.] “As computing demand shifts from large, traditional data centers to include smaller, more distributed environments at the edge, the ability to mix form factors seamlessly in ‘micro data centers,’ and to manage and automate operations from the cloud becomes vitally important,” wrote Kaustubh Das, Cisco vice president of strategy and product development, storage in its Computing Systems Product Group in a blog about the new server.To read this article in full, please click here

Industry bellwether Cisco revealed some important financial numbers this week – its revenues were $12.5 billion, up 4 percent for the third quarter year-over-year, with product revenue up 5 percent.But one of the of the more interesting tidbits is that the company said it was selling some 40 Catalyst 9000 systems a day in and has installed 2,700 of the big boxes this quarter bring the total to 5,800 since its introduction in 2017. The Catalyst 9000 is key to a number of Cisco’s future initiatives – one of the most important being its drive to build out its Network Intuitive plans for intent-based networking.[ Related: Getting grounded in intent-based networking] | The other is that the way its software is sold – via a variety of subscription/feature levels is a key component of its overall strategy to become a more software-oriented company.To read this article in full, please click here

HPE snaps-up hyperconverged-network (HCN) vendor Plexxi

Cisco embraces Kubernetes, pushing container software into mainstream
Cisco this week took big steps toward helping customers deploy, monitor and manage on-premises and public-cloud production-ready Kubernetes-based container applications.Kubernetes, originally designed by Google, is an open-source-based system for developing and orchestrating containerized applications. Containers can be deployed across multiple server hosts and Kubernetes orchestration lets customers build application services that span multiple containers, schedule those containers across a cluster, scale those containers and manage the container health. Cisco loses key software exec
Cisco lost a key warrior in its battle to become a monster software player this week as Rowan Trollope, senior vice president and head of the $5 billion Application Group, said he would be leaving the company effective May 3 to become CEO of cloud startup Five9.“During Trollope’s tenure, his team reinvented Cisco’s Collaboration business, pivoting to a SaaS model and making design, simplicity and exponential improvement the guiding principles of product development,” Five9 wrote in describing its new CEO’s pedigree.To read this article in full, please click here

Cisco this week fortified its storage family with two new 32G Fibre Channel switches and software designed to help customers manage and troubleshoot their SANS.The new switches, the 48-Port MDS 9148T and 96-Port MDS 9396T feature a technology called Auto Zone that automatically detects any new storage servers or devices that log into a SAN and automatically zones them without having to do manual configuration.[Check out REVIEW: VMware’s vSAN 6.6 and see IDC’s top 10 data center predictions . | Get regularly scheduled insights by signing up for Network World newsletters. ] The idea is to eliminate the cycles spent in provisioning new devices and avert errors that typically occur when manually configuring complex zones.
