FBI: Extortion e-mail, tech support scam-bags turning up the heat

Not dead yet: 7 of the oldest federal IT systems still wheezing away

There are some seriously old IT systems at work in the federal IT arsenal and some that are 56 years old have no real retirement date.That was one observation from a report issued this week from the federal watchdogs at the Government Accountability Office.“Agencies reported using several systems that have components that are, in some cases, at least 50 years old. For example, the Department of Defense uses 8-inch floppy disks in a legacy system that coordinates the operational functions of the nation's nuclear forces. In addition, the Department of the Treasury uses assembly language code—a computer language initially used in the 1950s and typically tied to the hardware for which it was developed,” the GAO stated.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Looking to continue tapping a market IDC says will be worth $6 billion by 2020, Software-Defined WAN company Viptela today said it raised $75M in a Series C round of financing.The new round of funding brings Viptela’s total funding to about $110M.The company said it would use the proceeds to grow sales, marketing, technical support and research and development.+More on Network World: What network technology is going to shake up your WAN?+This funding round was lead by investments from Redline Capital and new investor Northgate Capital as well as existing investor Sequoia Capital. DARPA this week detailed the next development phase of its reusable Mach 10 satellite taxi capable of carrying and deploying a 3,000- 5,000 lb. satellite into low earth orbit (LEO) at a target cost of less than $5M per launch. +More on Network World: NASA wants to get supersonic with new passenger jet+ The reusable Experimental Spaceplane (XS-1) XS-1 will demonstrate the potential for low cost and “aircraft-like” high operations payload delivery to orbit. DARPA said Phase 2 and 3 development will likely see a single contract worth $140M (Phase II - $123M, Phase III - $17M). Researchers with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have quickly moved to alter the way the military, public and private enterprises protect their networks from high-and low-speed distributed denial-of-service attacks with a program called Extreme DDoS Defense (XD3).The agency has since September awarded seven XD3 multi-million contracts to Georgia Tech, George Mason University, Invincea Labs, Raytheon BBN, Vencore Labs (two contracts) and this week to the University of Pennsylvania to radically alter DDOS defenses. One more contract is expected under the program.The UPenn project is developing defenses against distributed denial of service attacks that target specific protocols and their logic. These attacks are often difficult to diagnose and stop because the total volume of malicious traffic may be very low. The Martian author Andy Weir calls for massive new space station to prep humans for Mars trip

When it comes to living on Mars, the human body is simply not suited to living for long periods in zero-g. Until this issue is solved, we have no hope of landing humans on the surface of Mars, nor can we create permanent residences in space.That was the crux of the testimony given to the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology today by best-selling author of The Martian, Andy Weir. The hearing, entitled “Next Steps to Mars: Deep Space Habitats,” is exploring what NASA’s plans are for the development of deep space habitation. It’s definitely a service that’s taken for granted but HBO’s John Oliver this week pointed out that there’s a lot to be concerned about over the nation’s 911 emergency service.On Oliver’s Last Week Tonight HBO show, Oliver said 911 emergency call centers are antiquated, disjointed and in desperate need of funding and new technology. He said everyone should Google “understaffed 911 dispatch and [your town name]” to get an idea of problems near you and nationwide.Watch: The watchdogs at the Government Accountability Office in 2013 wrote about 911 technologies: “The continuing evolution of communications technologies and wireless phones has implications for 911 services. Since 911 call centers predominantly use older, analog-based infrastructure and equipment, the current E911 system is not designed to accommodate emergency communications from the range of new technologies in common use today, including text and picture messaging and Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony (e.g., Skype).
