IBM, Samsung team on unconventional, super-efficient semiconductor
IBM and Samsung Electronics have designed what the tech giants call an unconventionally designed semiconductor that promises to reduce energy consumption by 85% over existing chips.The design would enable a ton of new applications including energy-efficient cryptomining and data encryption but also cell phone batteries that could hold a charge for over a week instead of days without being recharged, companies stated.[Get regularly scheduled insights by signing up for Network World newsletters.] The new semiconductor could also find its way into new internet of things (IoT) and edge devices that draw less energy, letting them operate in more diverse environments like ocean buoys, autonomous vehicles and spacecraft, the companies stated. IBM offers one-stop-shop for mainframe hybrid cloud initiatives

AWS wants to get your mainframe apps into the cloud – fast
AWS is now offering a mainframe service that promises to help Big Iron customers interested in moving apps to the cloud cut that migration time by two-thirds.The goal of AWS Migration Acceleration Program for Mainframe is to get those customers off of the Big Iron “as fast as they possibly can” in order to take better advantage of the cloud, according to Adam Selipsky, CEO of AWS, speaking at Amazon’s AWS re:Invent conference. AWS targets IPv6 migration for serverless, container workloads
Amazon Web Services has launched new support for IPv6-only subnets that can meet the needs of workloads that require more IP addresses than IPv4 can readily provide.The service is available through Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and suitable for workloads such as serverless and container applications, according to a blog by Rohit Aswani, a senior specialist solutions architect and Aditya Santhanam, a senior product manager, both with AWS. “Workloads that are constrained by the limited size of the IPv4 address space can now migrate to an IPv6-only environment on AWS to scale up,” they wrote.To read this article in full, please click here

Spinoffs Kyndryl and VMware team up on multicloud

IDC: Cisco, Fortinet, HPE-Aruba, VMware lead hot SD-WAN market

Cisco’s ThousandEyes can peer into SaaS performance
Cisco has broadened the scope of its ThousandEyes network-intelligence gathering software to let customers watch over their growing expanse of software-as-a-service applications.In addition to its existing Internet Insights platform, ThousandEyes has a new program called Application Outages that promises to provide views into the availability of the SaaS applications employees are using.Internet Insights gathers data from what Cisco says are tens of thousands of ThousandEyes Cloud Agents and Enterprise Agents spread across the internet and enterprise networks globally.
