Red Hat acquires Ansible, the open source IT automation company.
The title should come as no surprise, as many have predicted such an acquisition in the past. The similar open source ideologies, the technology fit, the executive team's open source background and the rapid adoption of Ansible in the enterprise certainly draw parallels to the world's leader in open source technology. What was once a prediction is now reality, in just a little more than two years since Ansible, Inc., opened its doors, and we are thrilled!
Ansible made its name in IT automation, and our agile, simple and agentless model allowed us to reach beyond just configuration management and into application deployment and multitier orchestration. This helped to establish a strong lead in DevOps with CI/CD, while latching on to fast growing areas such as cloud, network and container management. Our open source project boomed, becoming one of the most successful projects on GitHub (#1 follower presence in IT automation) with more than 1,200 contributors. Ultimately, this success led to the Ansible project being named as one of 2014's top 10 open source projects, and a place in Gartner's ‘Cool DevOps Vendor’ report in 2015.

What’s your role at Ansible?
Mostly my days revolve around working closely with customers, partners and the fantastic Ansible community to bring more robust support for networking devices into Ansible and Ansible Tower. This includes applying Ansible to help evolve DevOps methodologies to solve problems associated with running network operations teams.

In this post, I’ll show you how to use Docker Machine in conjunction with VMware Photon OS Technical Preview 2 (aka “TP2”). Given that Photon was designed to host containers, this is—for the most part—pretty straightforward. There are a couple of glitches that I need to point out, though, that might hang up new users.
First off, kudos to Fabio Rapposelli for taking some time at VMworld to help me work through the details. I really appreciate his time!
If you want to use Docker Machine with Photon, there are four major requirements today (stress the word “today,” as all these products are rapidly evolving and these requirements may soon disappear or change):

You’ll need to use Fabio’s special build of Docker Machine that includes support for AppCatalyst and Photon OS. I anticipate that support for AppCatalyst and Photon OS (the latter of which is what’s really needed in this case) will get rolled into Docker Machine (main branch) soon, but for now a different build is needed. (If you don’t use Fabio’s build, Docker Machine will report an “unrecognized OS” or similar).

We’re happy to announce our confirmed speakers for AnsibleFest San Francisco 2015. Join us on November 19th at the InterContinental San Francisco for a day-long conference bringing together Ansible users, developers, IT professionals, and industry partners to learn more about ways automation is transforming IT.
We had a record number of submissions for this conference, and were excited to have such a dynamic pool of submissions to pick from. We took each submission, anonymized them to remove any speaker/company/product information, and sent them off to our team of Top Men and Women for blind review. We then picked out a well-rounded agenda from the highest scoring talks, and we’re happy to announce them today.

What a week. Some tech conferences I like, and others I love. Falling solidly in my "love" category, the Amazon team pulled off another great event with re:Invent 2015. Of course, the AWS product folks didn’t disappoint, either. (And neither did surprise re:Play party guest Zedd.)
We welcomed many hundreds of visitors to our booth during the three days. Over 200 shirts, many more Ansibulls, and every single sticker, luggage tag, and business card were gobbled up by excited Ansible users and Tower customers.
Perhaps the most entertaining part was to learn what people had to say:
“We heart Ansible.”
“Ansible is the only predictable thing about our environment.”
“DevOps? More like AnsibleOps.”
“You guys changed our lives.”
“I keep getting told I need to look at Ansible.”
“Thank you… just thank you.” (My personal favorite)
Certainly all bold statements for an IT orchestration tool. Even Network World joined in on the fun by naming Ansible one of the hottest products at re:Invent, thanks in part to our new IAM modules that simplify the setup and maintenance of IAM users, groups, keys, and policies.

We're over-the-moon excited to announce the Ansible online store is live. In response to all of the love you've shown us, we had to step up our swag game. The Ansible Store carries a variety of our best items, and we can't wait to see you showing off your Ansible pride.

During the second installment of our webinar series about Ansible Tower features, we highlighted system tracking, a functionality which was just added to Tower with our 2.2. release.
System Tracking was created to give administrators the necessary tools to audit and verify that machines are in compliance. Use the tool to see how a machine has changed over time, or compare machines in your cluster to see how they are different.
For example, you may need to determine whether a set of machines had a security patch applied, or determine when a patch was applied. The System Tracking tools can help you do that. They can also help you evaluate your infrastructure for compliance against specific requirements, and periodically examine machines for unexpected changes.
When you run a scan, you’ll be able to see packages, services, and Ansible facts side-by-side for comparison. All differences in Ansible facts are highlighted in red for easy reference.
You can also expand this function by writing your own Ansible module that gathers the custom facts you want to see. Simply implement a module that returns the “ansible_facts” key, as described in the Ansible documentation.
