Passing on the CEO Baton

The Internet Society has come far in its 25 years, and as its CEO for just some of that time I feel immense privilege in having been part of the organization’s continued growth and evolution.

Now, more than ever, I feel that the work we all do is the most consequential any of us will do in this challenging time. I continue to be inspired by the Internet Society, its staff and its loyal community every day.

So, it was with very mixed emotions that at the recent Internet Society Board of Trustees meeting in Singapore, I informed the Board that I will not be seeking an extension of my contract as CEO when it is due for renewal at the end of 2018.

With so many accomplishments behind us and at a time when the Internet itself is in the midst of rapid change, I firmly believe that the Internet Society is primed and ready to take on a stronger, more influential role in shaping the future of the Internet for the next generation of users. What I learned at my first Cloudflare Retreat
For the last seven years, Cloudflare has taken the entire company off site for a few days at the end of the year for a company retreat. Back in 2010, this meant five people from the San Francisco office. This November, we had 453 employees from our San Francisco, Singapore, London, Champaign (Illinois), New York City, Washington (DC), and Austin (Texas) offices spend time together in Monterey, California.

Knowing that so many teammates would be coming in from all over the world, we used the days leading up to the retreat to hold global team meetings, conduct a session of our home-grown Making Great Managers workshop, and brought in Valerie Aurora from Frame Shift Consulting to lead Ally Skills workshops for the entire company.

On Thursday, buses departed from Cloudflare headquarters and took us all down to Monterey. Our CEO, Matthew Prince, delivered opening remarks over lunch. During his talk, we learned about the imminent acquisition of Neumob, his thoughts about growing pains and how to successfully scale, and were reminded that we are at our best when we are inclusive of everyone. The reality of a self-managing data center is getting closer with HPE’s announcement last week of what it claims to be the first artificial intelligence (AI) predictive engine for trouble in the data center.HPE says next year it will offer an AI recommendation engine add-on that’s designed to predict and stop storage- and general-infrastructure trouble before it starts. It’s one of a number of autonomous data center components that we should expect to see soon from players. Worth Reading: ONAP Amsterdam

The Open Network Automation Platform, a Linux Foundation project, has released ONAP Amsterdam, an open-source platform to enable network automation for carriers and service providers. ONAP Amsterdam includes open-source software for orchestration and automation, as well as verified blueprints for two use cases. Carriers and service providers can download and deploy Amsterdam to automate their networks. Computer vision is fundamental for a broad set of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Household monitoring systems use cameras to provide family members with a view of what’s going on at home. Robots and drones use vision processing to map their environment and avoid obstacles in flight. Augmented reality glasses use computer vision to overlay important information on the user’s view, and cars stitch images from multiple cameras mounted in the vehicle to provide drivers with a surround or “bird’s eye” view which helps prevent collisions. The list goes on.Over the years, exponential improvements in device capabilities including computing power, memory capacity, power consumption, image sensor resolution, and optics have improved the performance and cost-effectiveness of computer vision in IoT applications.
