Moving to the cloud is supposed to reduce the headaches for IT administrators, but often it has the opposite effect of increasing their workload, especially around security and visibility. Microsoft’s cloud revenue grows, while IBM’s fades
This is a tale of two cloud players, both old-guard IT firms with vested interests in on-premises software sales. One is making a very successful transition to the cloud era, while the other is failing badly. And it’s a familiar story. Microsoft is kicking butt, and IBM is getting its butt kicked.In its most recent quarter, Microsoft announced revenues of $23.3 billion, $7.43 billion of that comes from what it calls “the Intelligent Cloud,” including Azure, a 97 percent year-over-year increase. There was another $8.45 billion from the Productivity and Business Process business, which includes Office and Office 365. Beware of companies claiming products have AI capabilities
Software companies are exploiting the current artificial intelligence (AI) craze by exaggerating the scope and capabilities of AI in their products, according to a report from Gartner. Gartner tracks product marketing hype with a tool it calls the Hype Cycle, measuring the growth and decline of products as they mature. It calls the process of overhyping AI "AI washing," similar to the way the term “greenwashing” was used to describe exaggerated claims of environmental-friendliness in various products or practices. Gartner said more than 1,000 vendors say their products employ AI, but many are "applying the AI label a little too indiscriminately." Google develops high-capacity cloud data transfer device
As any IT person knows and likely learned the hard way, you pay for every bit of data you transmit back and forth to your cloud provider. So, what do you do if you want to put a few petabytes in the cloud? The bill could hit the thousands of dollars, and it will take days to transfer it all—even under ideal circumstances.Amazon introduced a decidedly low-tech but practical solution two years ago called Snowball. It was a storage appliance they shipped to you, which you connected to your data center network, transferred all the data at very high speeds, then sent the device back to an Amazon data center, where they transferred the data for you. IBM has introduced the 14th generation of its Z series mainframes, which still sell respectably despite repeated predictions of their demise. One of the major features being touted is the simple ability to encrypt all of the data on the mainframe in one shot. The mainframe, called IBM Z or z14, introduces a new encryption engine that for the first time will allow users to encrypt all of their data with one click—in databases, applications or cloud services—with virtually no impact on performance.The new encryption engine is capable of running more than 12 billion encrypted transactions every day. The mainframe comes with four times more silicon for processing cryptographic algorithms over the previous generation mainframe along with encryption-oriented upgrades to the operating system, middleware and databases. Microsoft introduces Azure Stack, its answer to OpenStack
Microsoft has taken the wraps off Azure Stack, its take on hybrid cloud infrastructure and response to the popular OpenStack open-source cloud computing package. Azure Stack will begin shipping in September.Azure Stack was originally designed as a software-only product, much like OpenStack. But Microsoft has decided to add integrated hardware turnkey solutions from its certified partners such as Dell EMC, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco and Huawei.Microsoft first announced Azure Stack at the Ignite Conference in 2015 and formally introduced it at the Inspire conference in Washington, D.C.Azure Stack is basically the same APIs, tools and processes that power Azure, but it’s intended to be hosted on-premises in private cloud scenarios. Being the smartass that I am, I responded on Twitter with, “You mean it spends 18 hours a day in sleep mode?”That report was later debunked, but the effort to simulate the brain continues, using new types of processors far faster and more brain-like than your standard x86 processor. IBM and the U.S. Air Force have announced one such project, while Google has its own.+ Also on Network World: Machine learning proves its worth to business + Researchers from Google and the University of Toronto last month released an academic paper titled “One Model To Learn Them All,” and they were pretty quiet about it.
