Licenses for 5G service provider auction winners approved by FCC

The winners of a critical FCC auction for midband spectrum that ended last November have received their official grants of license to use the airwaves for which they spent a total of $22.4 billion, the FCC announced Wednesday.A total of 4,041 licenses were issued to 23 different bidders, according to the commission. Licensees hoping to use the spectrum for 5G rollouts still have to reimburse incumbent non-federal users of the band, which had been in use for radiolocation purposes, and the FCC said that further details about those costs would be laid out in a subsequent filing.Auction 110 saw the government sell off 100MHz of spectrum in the midband — around the 3.45GHz range — divided into 10 10MHz blocks for each Partial Economic Area or PEA that the FCC adopted in 2014. (There are 416 PEAs covering the US, meaning that 119 specific licenses were not sold in the auction.)To read this article in full, please click here

5G, automotive to drive semiconductor revenue through 2022

Worldwide semiconductor revenue is set to increase by 13.6% this year as demand continues to exceed supply, according to a Gartner Research report. That growth will likely level off in 2023, however, with just a 3.6% increase predicted for that year, noted the report, which was released Tuesday. It's a function of overall supply and demand coming into near-balance in the future, according to Gartner. The chip shortage that has created widespread supply constraints in the recent past is beginning to ease, although some sectors — most notably the automotive industry – will still see demand outstripping supply for the foreseeable future.Alan Priestley, the report's author and a research vice president at Gartner, said that automotive semiconductor demand will grow despite flaccid overall vehicle production. To read this article in full, please click here

Dell releases reference designs for retail, manufacturing edge solutions

Dell will offer new "validated" designs — a term used for edge devices that have been tested for compatibility in a range of important capabilities in a particular field — for retail edge computing deployments and the manufacturing sector later this year, according to an announcement issued today. The idea behind both the retail and manufacturing validated designs is to provide a central infrastructure stack for the numerous individual applications that might be in use in any given location. For retail, that can range from inventory tracking systems and smart labels on shelves, to connected point-of-sale terminals, all the way up through numerous smart vision capabilities. To read this article in full, please click here

Nokia pulls most of its business from Russia

Finland-based telecommunications equipment giant Nokia has announced that it would cease most of its operations in Russia, in response to that country’s month-old invasion of Ukraine.Nokia said in a statement that it would suspend equipment deliveries, accept no new orders and move “our limited R&D activities” out of the country, saying that “it has been clear for Nokia since the early days of the invasion of Ukraine that continuing our presence in Russia would not be possible.”Russia accounted for less than 2% of the company’s net sales in 2021, according to Nokia, which added that the move will not affect the bottom line in a significant way, and that the company expects to hit all of its immediate earnings targets going forward. To read this article in full, please click here

5 VMware products need patching against serious security vulnerabilities

Virtualization and cloud vendor VMware this week disclosed eight vulnerabilities in five of its products, and urged users of Workspace ONE Access and all its products that include VMware Identity Manager components to patch immediately.Three of those vulnerabilities were rated critical on the CVSSv3 scale—two of them contain the possibility for remote code execution, while the third would allow a bad actor to bypass VMware’s user authentication systems to execute unauthorized operations. To read this article in full, please click here

John Deere gets more connected with Samsara integration

Agricultural equipment manufacturer John Deere this week announced a new level of integration with Samsara Vehicle Gateways, which should allow farmers a greater degree of real-time insight into the vehicles that support key farm gear. The new integration works through JDLink, John Deere’s in-house connectivity layer for remote management and monitoring agricultural equipment. JDLink, via a phone or web app, can show remote diagnostic information, track machinery geographically, and provide a host of other remote monitoring features.Integrating Samsara’s vehicle gateways — edge devices that can be equipped on any vehicle to track engine diagnostics, GPS position, and many other pieces of operational data — means that JDLink can be used to track a much wider array of support vehicles necessary for modern agriculture, not just John Deere’s own machines, which have native support for the system. To read this article in full, please click here

SD-WAN may be getting cheaper

As SD-WAN adoption continues to flourish, the market has begun to stabilize and competitive pressures have begun to force prices lower, according to research from TeleGeography.SD-WAN costs are apparently becoming more accessible, particularly at the lower-capacity end of the market, according to TeleGeography’s research, which said that median non-recurring charges for SD-WAN implementations—meaning charges for the SD-WAN appliances themselves, not for additional managed services—have decreased by about 15% compounded annually since 2018.To read this article in full, please click here

Global enterprise IoT market strong but faces challenges

The global enterprise IoT market grew by 22% to a total of $157.9 billion in 2021despite some adverse conditions  labncluding labor and chip shortages, according to a study released today by Germany-based research firm IoT Analytics. That figure is slightly lower than the 24% that the company projected in previous reports, but it’s still a substantial rate of growth, and one that IoT Analytics expects will be sustained for the next five years, for a projected total market size of $525 billion by 2027.One of the main factors driving enterprise IoT growth below previous estimates was a shortage of skilled workers, according to the report. Businesses in 2021 had trouble finding enough IoT-conversant hires to move digital transformation and IoT projects forward, with job postings related to IoT growing by 41% between July 2021 and Mach 2022. The firm also cited other research, from Inmarsat, as saying that a paucity of in-house IoT knowledge is one of the key blockers to more widespread IoT deployment. To read this article in full, please click here
