Imanis Data focuses on big data backup and recovery

Imanis Data, formerly known as Talena, released version 3.0 of its eponymous backup and recovery platform last week with emphasis on supporting very large datasets that are being generated in the era of big data. The company notes that three out of four companies have experienced a data loss over the last year, which carries an average cost of $900,000 and weeks of downtime. With Imanis Data 3.0, the company claims its backup architecture backs up, recovers and replicates terabyte and petabyte-sized data sets up to 10 times faster than any other solution on the market, minimizing the impact of data loss by reducing costly days and weeks of downtime to minutes and hours and reducing secondary storage costs by up to 80%. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

All you need to know about Unix environment variables

Simply put, environment variables are variables that are set up in your shell when you log in. They are called “environment variables” because most of them affect the way your Unix shell works for you. One points to your home directory and another to your history file. One identifies your mail file while another controls the colors that you see when you ask for a file listing. Still another sets up your default search path.If you haven’t examined your environment variables in a while, you might be surprised by how many of them are configured. An easy way to see how many have been established in your account is to run this command: $ env | wc -l 25 The env command (or printenv) will list all of the enviroment variables and their values. Here’s a sampling:To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Why 802.11ax is the next big thing in Wi-Fi

I know, I know, I’ve heard it before. A new technology comes along, and it promises to be the next big thing. Consumers and businesses buy it, and what happens? It fails to live up to the hype. In my opinion, almost every iPhone release over the past five years has been that way. Sure there were some cool new features, but overall it’s not something I’d say was game changing. One technology that does promise to live up to the hype is 802.11ax, the next standard for wireless LANs. I say that because this next generation of Wi-Fi was engineered for the world we live in where everything is connected and there’s an assumption that upload and download traffic will be equivalent. Previous generations of Wi-Fi assumed more casual use and that there would be far more downloading of information than uploading. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

IDG Contributor Network: Why AI is more important than big data for IoT development

While the development of the internet of things has revolutionized heavy industry, online shopping, localized data collection and virtually every other aspect of modern life and business, innovators are still struggling over the future of the IoT, and how they’ll get there. While many see big data as the driving engine behind the IoT, savvy investors and entrepreneurs have shown that the real power behind the interconnectivity phenomenon is artificial intelligence.Tapping into the potential of AI won’t be easy for innovators, but doing so will be far more profitable for the IoT’s future than relying on big data alone. As programmed intelligence grows to new and greater heights, its ability to optimize the IoT will only be enhanced. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

IDG Contributor Network: Data centers: at the center of growth

Data center REITs have returned more than 100 percent over the last two years. Crown Castle recently purchased Lightower for one of the highest per fiber mile prices ever. What is driving the growth? Isn’t everyone using the cloud? The data center is still the safest place to store and process your data. The data center is where the cloud resides. Cross connect capabilities like connections to financial markets, exchanges, Bloomberg, Reuters, and even cloud providers like AWS and Azure make data centers more functional for companies looking to take advantage of their geography.Geography impacts latency as light can only travel between two distances within a set span of time governed by physics. Tony Soprano said it best when talking about Real Estate to his son Anthony Junior, “Buy land AJ, ‘cause God ain’t making any more of it.” That couldn’t be more true about data centers. Areas like Ashburn, Virginia, are data center hot spots because of low taxes, bandwidth availability, and proximity to Washington, D.C. and New York.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

IoT hype cycle antidote: Sitting with the engineers

Google’s former HR chief, Jonathan Rosenberg recounts in his book How Google Works a story about CEO Larry Page’s response to an MBA employee’s PowerPoint product plan. Page told the MBA, “Go sit with the engineers.”Page’s point: An effective new product plan can be created only if the engineering details are understood.Along this line of thinking, I spoke with Joe Biron, Internet of Things CTO at PTC, because the company has staked its future on IoT, and Biron has a decade of IoT engineering experience. PTC’s mature businesses, mechanical design, and product lifecycle management are closely related to the company’s industrial IoT business, where the company is focused for growth. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

How the hospitality industry will profit from the IoT

Connecting the world changes everything. That’s what businesses and consumers are learning as they embrace the Internet of Things (IoT) for everything from household garage door openers to smart-city applications that solve traffic congestion and reduce crime. But IoT is more significant than just adding connectivity to existing products or services. In fact, it is about changing the way products and services deliver value. In the process, products are becoming services, and services are becoming more intelligent.+ Also on Network World: IoT devices or humans? The hospitality industry is not immune to this evolution, and, in fact, it is well positioned to benefit from IoT. That’s because the industry is poised to improve the customer experience while simultaneously reducing costs. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

How to plan your migration to IPv6

With the depletion of IPv4 addresses, more organizations are encouraged to transition over to using IPv6 addresses. Many organizations are noticing the benefits of the built-in security features of IPv6. Also, enterprise IT managers are observing that their service providers are successfully using IPv6, and this encourages them to move forward with it.To continue to ignore IPv6 could cause any number of potential problems, including an inability to immediately migrate to IPv6 when there is no longer a choice, loss of internet connectivity, and not being able to compete with organizations whose systems are configured for IPv6.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

IDG Contributor Network: The new branch office SD-WAN model

Wrapping up an SD-WAN workshop session with a client last week, I reflected on how rapidly the branch office WAN connectivity and management model is changing. Some great opportunities are emerging for enterprise IT teams that can materially impact how the network is designed, paid for and managed. Here are some thoughts:1. Public cloud is driving a lightweight edge security model Most people agree that SD-WAN can facilitate service chaining, and a selective backhaul model is interesting to many enterprises that want to concentrate next-generation firewall services in larger locations. But with the rapid growth of distributed content in public cloud applications (even from Microsoft and Salesforce, who long resisted this trend that Google pioneered) it’s increasingly counterproductive to backhaul browsing traffic long distances from the end users. It reduces performance, and adds significant load at hubs on the network — not ideal when this can represent 80 percent or more of the traffic. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Is your network ready for the Internet of Things?

Buying into IoT comes with a wealth of benefits, but adopting heavy use of the internet of things means more than plugging in devices and waiting for the data to pour in; it means modifying network infrastructure to accommodate them. This is not a trivial consideration. If the network doesn’t adequately support all aspects of IoT, a company may be unable to take advantage of all that data and will fail to realize the return on investment it was hoping for.+Related: Feds consider tougher requirements for IoT security;  IoT Security for Health Care is in critical condition; What is IoT?+To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

The GDPR Deadline is Fast Approaching; How Enterprises are Readying Themselves

The deadline for compliance with the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is May 25, 2018.  Many organizations have spent countless hours already in their preparation for the deadline, while other organizations are just getting around to reading up on it.  GDPR, like Y2K of a couple decades ago, has international implications that for some organizations HAS to be addressed as GDPR will impact the lifeblood of their operations, whereas for most organizations, some due diligence needs to be done to ensure they are within the compliance of the regulation.GDPR is Today’s Y2KI reference Y2K as I was one of the advisors to the United States White House on Y2K and spent the latter part of the decade before the Millennium switchover traveling around the globe helping organizations prepare for 1/1/2000.  Today with GDPR as I did then with Y2K believe there are fundamental things every organization needs to do to be prepared for the deadline, but to NOT get caught up in the hype and over speculation to the Nth degree detail that’ll drive you crazy. To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Feds consider tougher requirements for IoT security

A bill submitted this week to the U.S. Senate could be the first step toward fixing IoT security, requiring that device makers who want to do business with the federal government meet basic security standards. The bill mandates that any Internet-connected device provided by government contractors be free from known security vulnerabilities, be able to receive regular software updates, and use up-to-date communications and encryption industry standards.+ALSO ON NETWORK WORLD: IDC: SD-WAN growth is exploding for at least the next 5 years + The 10 most powerful companies in enterprise networkingTo read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here
