Why predictive maintenance hasn’t taken off as expected

“Two years ago, predictive maintenance was forecast to be one of the most promising uses of the industrial Internet of Things (IoT).”That’s the lead of report based on a recent Bain & Company survey of more than 600 high-tech executives (Beyond Proofs of Concept: Scaling the Industrial IoT, by Bain partners Michael Schallehn, Christopher Schorling, Peter Bowen and Oliver Straehle). The report goes on to note that identifying precisely when equipment might fail “seemed like a no-brainer.” And yet, the report concludes, “predictive maintenance has failed to take off as broadly as expected.” In fact, industrial leaders were not as excited about predictive maintenance as they were back in a 2016 survey.To read this article in full, please click here

Edge computing container specialist Vapor IO has organized the Kinetic Edge Alliance, a group of hardware, software and networking companies that plan to collaborate on accelerating the integration edge solutions.The list of partners includes Federated Wireless, Linode, MobiledgeX, Packet, StackPath, Alef Mobitech, Detecon International, Hitachi Vantara, New Continuum Data Centers, Pluribus Networks, and Seagate Technology.The Alliance plans to target the top 30 U.S. metro markets with its products, which cover nearly 50 percent of the U.S. population. Lenovo jumps into the pay-per-use server market

A year ago, every major vendor had a pay-per-use on-premises server as a way to counteract the popularity of cloud vendors — all but Lenovo.Well, no more. The company is launching TruScale, a pay-per-use system for its servers that it says offers true pay-per-use and no requirement of a minimum capacity purchase. TruScale is a subscription-based offering that allows customers to use and pay for data center hardware and services either on premises or at a customer-preferred location without having to purchase the equipment outright. Capacity can be scaled up or down to accommodate business needs automatically. It requires no minimum capacity purchase, which HPE and Dell do require.To read this article in full, please click here

BrandPost: Wi-Fi Next Steps: 802.11ax or 802.11ac?

With a new wireless standard ready and available, 2019 unwraps a wireless conundrum as 802.11ax solutions take their place in the market. You may also hear about Wi-Fi 6, which is just the new nomenclature used by the Wi-Fi Alliance (instead of 802.11ax) in the effort to simplify the naming convention. With a hat tip to iOS, this nomenclature is pretty familiar to mobile users so there’s a good chance we’ll see Wi-Fi 7, 8, and 9 in years to come. For the sake of consistency in our comparison of the two standards discussed here, I will refer to the new standard as 802.11ax.Outside what to call the new standard, Aruba and others have introduced APs that leverage the new performance capabilities of 802.11ax. Red Hat announces container flaw CVE-2019-5736

Red Hat announced a vulnerability this morning – one that can be exploited if a user runs malicious or modified containers. The flaw in runC (a lightweight portable container runtime) and Docker that this vulnerability exposes allows an attacker to escape a container and access the underlying file system. That might sound bad, but there's more.The good news is that this vulnerability cannot be exploited if SELinux is enabled and that this is the default on Red Hat systems. Cisco pushes silicon photonics for enterprise, webscale networking

Cisco says it's closed its deal to buy optical-semiconductor firm Luxtera for $660 million bringing it the advanced optical technology customers will need for speed and throughput for future data-center and webscale networks.When Cisco announced the deal in December, Rob Salvagno, Cisco vice president of Corporate Business Development, said, “As system port capacity increases from 100GbE to 400GbE and beyond, optics plays an increasingly important role in addressing network infrastructure constraints, particularly density and power requirements.”To read this article in full, please click here

Dell CTO talks modern data centers, the edge, and digital disruption

Dell’s CTO has laid out the company’s vision of where enterprise technology is headed in 2019, and it’s not what people were predicting a few years ago.Gone is the talk of the demise of the data center. Instead, the data center is being repurposed, and some of its tasks are being moved to the edge, said Robert Hormuth, CTO and vice president of Dell EMC Server Infrastructure Solutions.
