Amazon will literally truck your data into its cloud

It can be hard moving large amounts of data to the cloud. Even with consistent 10 Gbps of data transfer, it would take years to get hundreds of petabytes from an on-premises data center to a public cloud provider.Amazon is aiming to speed that process up with a high-capacity data transfer product: a literal truck. The Snowmobile is a big, white semi-trailer that can hold 100PB of data. New supercomputer will unite x86, Power9 and ARM chips

For once, there will be a ceasefire in the war between major chip architectures x86, ARM and Power9, which will all be used in a supercomputer being built in Barcelona.The MareNostrum 4 is being built by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, and will have three clusters, each of which will house Intel x86, ARM and Power9 chips. Those clusters will be linked to form a supercomputer that will deliver up to 13.7 petaflops of performance.All three architectures have never been implemented together in a supercomputer, let alone PCs or servers. It raises questions on how the architectures will interoperate.The three chip architectures are fundamentally different. An application written to take advantage of a specific architecture won't work on another, but server architectures are changing so different types of systems can coexist. Microsoft declares summer’s Windows 10 upgrade fit for business

Microsoft today promoted its Windows 10 August upgrade to the Current Branch for Business release track, putting the "Anniversary Update" in the queue for automatic download and installation on enterprise PCs.The move will also set in motion a two-month countdown clock on support for the original mid-2015 version of Windows 10."Windows 10 1607, also known as the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, has been declared as Current Branch for Business (CBB) and is ready for deployment," Michael Niehaus, a director of product marketing, said in a post to a company blog that used similar wording to the first upgrade to the CBB. Finland’s largest airline inks iOS deal with Apple and IBM

Apple this week signed on another large business customer through its partnership with IBM. The deal that will see Finland's largest airline use iOS apps for technical operations and customer experience. Finnair says it carries more than 10 million customers each year between 70 cities in Europe, 17 in Asia and three cities in North America. Finnair has a team in place at IBM's "MobileFirst for iOS Garage," which operates as a collaborative development hub for iOS enterprise apps. The survey respondents were given a wide range of options and asked to indicate which options described their company’s approach to implementing an SD-WAN. Their responses, which are shown in Figure 1, show that there is broad interest in SD-WANs. For example, only a quarter of the respondents (26%) work for companies that have not yet made any analysis of SD-WANs and only a tenth of the respondents work for companies that have looked at SD-WANs but decided to not take any additional steps over the next year. However, that broad interest has not yet translated into broad adoption as only 5% of the survey respondents indicated that they currently have SD-WAN functionality running in their production networks. —ECI

IDC predicts the collapse of the Windows Phone by 2020
