Cisco issues critical security warning for IOS XE REST API container

Cisco this week said it issued a software update to address a vulnerability in its Cisco REST API virtual service container for Cisco IOS XE software that scored a critical 10 out of 10 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) system. With the vulnerability an attacker could submit malicious HTTP requests to the targeted device and if successful, obtain the token-id of an authenticated user. This token-id could be used to bypass authentication and execute privileged actions through the interface of the REST API virtual service container on the affected Cisco IOS XE device, the company said.To read this article in full, please click here

BrandPost: IT-as-a-Service Simplifies Hybrid IT

The data center must rapidly change. Companies are increasingly moving toward hybrid IT models, with some workloads in the cloud and others staying on premises. The burden of ever-growing apps and data is placing pressure on infrastructure in both worlds, but especially the data center.Organizations are struggling to reach the required speed and flexibility — with the same public-cloud economics — from their on-premises data centers. That’s likely because they’re dealing with legacy systems acquired over the years, possibly inherited as the result of mergers and acquisitions. These complex environments create headaches when trying to accommodate for IT capacity fluctuations. When extra storage is needed, for example, 67% of IT departments buy too much, according to Futurum Research. They don’t have the visibility into resources, nor the ability to effectively scale up and down.To read this article in full, please click here

BrandPost: MPLS Migration: How a KISS Transformed the WANs of 4 IT Managers

Back in 1960, a Lockheed engineer named Kelly Johnson coined the acronym KISS for “keep it simple stupid.” His wise—and simple—advice was that systems tend to work better when they’re simple than when they’re complex. KISS became an essential U.S. Navy design principle and captures the crux of any WAN transformation initiative. So many of the challenges of today’s WANs stem from the sheer number of components involved. Each location may require one or more routers, firewalls, WAN optimizers, VPN concentrators, and other devices just to connect safely and effectively with other locations or the cloud. The result: multiple points of failure and a potential uptime and troubleshooting nightmare. Simply understanding the state of the WAN can be difficult with information spread across so many devices and components. Managing all the updates required to protect the network from new and evolving threats can be overwhelming. To read this article in full, please click here

Heavy Networking 480: WTF Is Digital Transformation?

Today's Heavy Networking tries to leak some of the hot air out of the term "digital transformation" to see what this term really means for IT and the business, and what the impact of transformation might be on engineers responsible for such initiatives. Our guests are Paul Beyer, Infrastructure Architect; Tobias Metz, Consultant Network Engineering & Training Coordinator; and Emma Cardinal-Richards, Senior Network Architect.

Your Day with Encryption

How often do you use encryption? It seems like the stuff of spy films, but you might be surprised to find out how often it touches your daily life.

Encryption is the process of scrambling or enciphering data, and only someone with the key can read or access it. You can use it for things like shopping online, using mobile banking, or using secure messaging apps. So while you may not be smuggling encrypted government secrets across borders, you do rely on it, along with your passwords and settings, to keep your data secure and private.

Learn about all of the ways you use encryption.

Your alarm vibrates. You reach for your phone, ready to snooze before you think better of it. You’ve got a big presentation at work and you’re going to need every minute today. There’s a message from your friend in Australia wishing you luck. How thoughtful! Even more thoughtful: your friend used an end-to-end encrypted messaging app. Sure, they saved on international phone charges, but the added security is nice too.

BrandPost: Silver Peak and Check Point Partner to Automate Local Internet Breakout, Securing the WAN Edge for Cloud-First Enterprises

WAN edge infrastructure is one of the most rapidly changing areas of IT, driven largely by the unabated migration of business applications to SaaS offerings and to public clouds or IaaS instances. As reported recently by Forbes, 83 percent of enterprise workloads will be hosted in the cloud by 2020[1]. No longer centrally hosted solely in corporate data centers, applications are now hosted anywhere, and often in multiple locations. SaaS and IaaS providers strategically host their services in multiple data centers around the globe in metropolitan cities where business users are located. Connecting users to the closest SaaS and IaaS instances minimizes data transmission latency or delay and delivers the highest cloud application performance to end users. To read this article in full, please click here

Can We Make REST API Transactional Across Multiple Calls?

I got interesting feedback from one of my readers after publishing my REST API Is Not Transactional blog post:

One would think a transactional REST interface wouldn’t be too difficult to implement. Using HTTP1/1, it is possible to multiplex several REST calls into one connection to a specific server. The first call then is a request for start a transaction, returning a transaction ID, to be used in subsequent calls. Since we’re not primarily interested in the massive scalability of stateless REST calls, all the REST calls will be handled by the same frontend. Obviously the last call would be a commit.

I wouldn’t count on HTTP pipelining to keep all requests in one HTTP session (mixing too many layers in a stack never ends well) but we wouldn’t need it anyway the moment we’d have a transaction ID which would be identical to session ID (or session cookie) traditional web apps use.
