After 4 days, Gabon is getting back on the Internet

On September 1, we reported that we had seen a complete shutdown of Internet access to CloudFlare sites from Gabon.

This morning, Internet connectivity in Gabon appears to have been at least partially restored starting at around 0500 UTC. Some news reports indicate that Internet access has been restored in the capital but that access to social media sites is still restricted.

We will continue to monitor the situation to see if traffic from Gabon return to its normal levels and update this blog post.

1st Attempt – No Dice

So I just got back from my first attempt at the CCDE practical, and unfortunally I didnt pass it.
It was a very different exam than the CCIE and it takes a little while to become used to the interface and exam style.

I started my journey to London on the 30th of August and right off the bat it started out badly with me getting an eye infection in one eye. By the end of the day it had spread to my other eye. Not really what you want or need going into an exam which is heavy on the reading part.

However, it was awesome meeting some of my study buddies from our Slack group! We had a great meal and a few good beers! – Time to call it a night.

The exam has been documented elsewhere, so i wont spend much time on it here. Suffice it to say its a difficult beast ?

I only used 5.5 hours of my 9 hour slot, and i just wanted to get out of there and rest my eyes to be honest.

I departed London September 1st and im now back at work. Much the wiser however.

What to do when Verizon won’t close your email account

Way back, in the mists of time, when we were all much younger and  the world was a brighter, happier place — almost a year ago — I published a piece on Verizon’s impressively terrible e-mail service: Why Verizon's email service sucks and what to do about it. But wait! There’s more making it even suckier! Reader “D C”, commenting on the post a few days after publishing, noted that: Verizon also blocks POP access from outside the US.  So while I'm traveling, I'm not able to get my personal email.  They disclose this nowhere on their site, nor do most of their support people seem to understand this policy.  Pretty absurd.To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

Two different hacking groups, both which claim to be of the non-malicious variety, have been busy bringing suspended Twitter accounts back from the dead and power-spamming Variety subscribers.OurMine hacked Variety, power-spammed subscribersIf folks who like news about Hollywood hadn’t heard of the hacking group OurMine, then some of them are very familiar with the group’s name now.OurMine reportedly compromised Variety’s content management system around 9 am PT on Saturday and published a post which Engadget said was later removed, but the hacking collective’s antics didn’t stop there. Building a Raspberry Pi-powered Barkometer, Part 2

IBM’s Watson looks for a role in the home

Not content with helping cure cancers and winning Jeopardy, Watson wants to get inside our heads and our homes, whispering instructions into our wireless headsets and helping us do our laundry.That's the message from IBM's global head of Watson IoT, Harriet Green, in a keynote speech here at IFA in Berlin.IBM will work with appliance maker Whirlpool, TV and camera company Panasonic, wireless headphone designer Bragi and Withings owner Nokia to add Watson's cognitive computing capabilities to their products, the company said.Those cognitive capabilities could help devices talk with one another, or with us.For example, a washing machine could tell a dryer what program to use for the clothes it has just washed, or tell its owner when to order more detergent. Computer vision techniques could help security cameras distinguish between friends and strangers or identify suspicious activity. Sony previews prototype Xperia gadgets

Sony is looking at taking the Xperia brand beyond smartphones and is showing off some prototype gadgets at the IFA trade show in Berlin. Sam Labs shows off a new educational electronics kit — with no wires

Perhaps you're old enough to remember when building interactive electronic devices involved breadboards, soldering irons and assembly code.Tell young people today that, though, and they won't believe you -- especially if they've used one of the educational electronics sets Sam Labs is showing at IFA in Berlin.The components in these sets are the same as you would find in beginners' electronics kits of the 1970s and 80s: lamps, photo sensors, pushbuttons, potentiometers, tilt switches and DC motors.The big difference is, there are no wires.Instead, the components are mounted on small plastic blocks each containing a USB-rechargeable battery and a Bluetooth module. 25 is the New 10

I am continually amazed at the productivity of the Cumulus Networks development team who recently collaborated with the Mellanox development team to do some amazing things in this new Cumulus Linux 3.1 release. Besides innovating on a number of important new software features, they added support for five new switches from Mellanox, including the first native 25 Gigabit Open Ethernet switch as well as the highest capacity 10/100GbE switch on the market.

The Mellanox SN2410 is the industry’s first generally available switch with native 25 Gigabit Ethernet (25GbE) ports. Working for *the* provider of 99% of all 25GbE NICs sold worldwide, I can say with confidence that, until now, all 25GbE servers have been connected to 100GbE switch ports via breakout cables. The SN2410 changes all that by providing 48 SFP28 ports that can natively operate in 1G, 10G, or 25G modes, which is great for cutting-edge deployments while providing backward compatibility for legacy devices. Just like 10GbE SFP+ ports, the 25GbE SP28 ports can utilize inexpensive passive copper direct-attach cables.
