What is Cloudflare One?

Running a secure enterprise network is really difficult. Employees spread all over the world work from home. Applications are run from data centers, hosted in public cloud, and delivered as services. Persistent and motivated attackers exploit any vulnerability.

Enterprises used to build networks that resembled a castle-and-moat. The walls and moat kept attackers out and data in. Team members entered over a drawbridge and tended to stay inside the walls. Trust folks on the inside of the castle to do the right thing, and deploy whatever you need in the relative tranquility of your secure network perimeter.

The Internet, SaaS, and “the cloud” threw a wrench in that plan. Today, more of the workloads in a modern enterprise run outside the castle than inside. So why are enterprises still spending money building more complicated and more ineffective moats?

Deep Dive: ACL Configuration Management Using Ansible Network Automation Resource Modules

In October 2019 as part of the Red Hat Ansible Engine 2.9 release, the Ansible Network Automation team introduced the first resource modules. These opinionated network modules make network automation easier and more consistent for those automating various network platforms in production. The goal for resource modules is to avoid creating and maintaining overly complex jinja2 templates for rendering and pushing network configuration. 

This blog post covers the newly released ios_acls resource module and how to automate manual processes associated with switch and router configurations. These network automation modules are used for configuring routers and switches from popular vendors (but not limited to) Arista, Cisco, Juniper, and VyOS. The access control lists (ACLs) network resource modules are able to read ACL configuration from the network, provide the ability to modify and then push changes to the network device. These opinionated network resource modules make network automation easier and more consistent for those automating various network platforms in production. I’ll walk through several examples and describe the use cases for each state parameter (including three newly released state types) and how these are used in real world scenarios.

Common red masonry bricks – the same type used in construction projects, including many data centers – can be adapted and used to store electricity, researchers claim.A team from Washington University in St. Louis has found that the red pigment in bricks can trigger a chemical reaction, in much the same way rust occurs, that enables bricks to store a significant amount of energy.Specialized bricks aren't required; the synthesis works with any kind of brick, according to an article published on the university's news site. The team used common bricks bought from the Home Depot in Brentwood, Missouri, for 65 cents apiece.To read this article in full, please click here

Orbital edge computing: nano satellite constellations as a new class of computer system

Orbital edge computing: nanosatellite constellations as a new class of computer system, Denby & Lucia, ASPLOS’20.

Last time out we looked at the real-world deployment of 5G networks and noted the affinity between 5G and edge computing. In true Crocodile Dundee style, Denby and Lucia are entitled to say “that’s not the edge, this is the edge!”. Today’s paper choice has it all: clusters of formation-flying autonomous nanosatellites working in tandem to overcome the physical limitations of space and the limited bandwidth to earth. The authors call this Orbital Edge Computing in contrast to the request-response style of satellite communications introduced with the previous generation of monolithic satellites. Only space system architects don’t call it request-response, they call it a ‘bent-pipe architecture.’

Momentum towards large constellations of nanosatellites requires a reimagining of space systems as distributed, edge-sensing and edge-computing systems.

Satellites are changing!

Satellites used to be large monolithic devices, e.g. the 500kg, $192M Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite. Over the last couple of decades there’s been a big switch to /nanosatellite/ constellations. Nanosatellites are typically 10cm cubes (for the “CubeSat” standard), weigh just a few kilograms, and cost in the thousands of dollars.

When Will You Need Wi-Fi 6E at Home?

The pandemic has really done a number on most of our office environments. For some, we went from being in a corporate enterprise with desks and coffee makers to being at home with a slightly different desk and perhaps a slightly better coffee maker. However, one thing that didn’t improve was our home network.

For the most part, the home network has been operating on a scale radically different from those of the average corporate environment. Taking away the discrepancies in Internet speed for a moment you would have a hard time arguing that most home wireless gear is as good or better than the equivalent enterprise solution. Most of us end up buying our equipment from the local big box store and are likely shopping as much on price as we are on features. As long as it supports our phones, gaming consoles, and the streaming box we picked up we’re happy. We don’t need QoS or rogue detection.
